Weekly Wrap Up – August 6, 2010


FEATURED STORY: Wednesday, Judge Walker ruled in the U.S. Appeals Court that California’s Proposition 8, was fundamentally unconstitutional.  Justice Walker saw the legislation as state sanctioned discrimination and stated that the supporters of Prop. 8, did not provide sufficient evidence as to why the legislation was necessary. Walker refused to accept the argument of that gay couples could not naturally reproduce and provide natural homes for children, an argument that invalidates the many different types of families that exist in our culture.

California’s Proposition 8

  • Obama’s interesting stance on gay marital rights; he supports the overturn of Prop 8, but does not believe that marriage is between a man and a women. Read Article Here

The Supreme Court

  • Thursday, Elena Kagan was confirmed as the newest Supreme Court Justice, and sworn in on Saturday.  She is the third female justice in the Edwards court and the fourth female justice on the supreme court ever. Read Article Here

Women’s Rights Around the World:


  • The government of Saudi Arabia is now notifying men who have guardianship over all the women in their families, via text message when their female charges leave the country unaccompanied. Read Article Here
  • Time Magazine’s controversial cover story on the state of women in Afghanistan if the United States negotiates an end to the war has caused accusations of pro-war sentiments.  This article from the Huffington Post explains the backlash  against Katie Couric’s interview with the Time editor. Many people are dismayed at her ‘lack of research’ to understand the actual situation of women  in Afghanistan. Read Article Here
  • In China, where prostitution is rampant, there is a push for the legalization of prostitution to protect the illegal sex workers. Read Article Here
  • The Gulabi Gang and Pink Chaddi’s of India are fighting domestic abuse and sexual violence in the street by banding together, wearing pink, and kicking butt! Read Article Here
  • Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, an Iranian woman, convicted of adultry and sentenced to death, is now offered safety by Brazil, who as of recently is on positive terms with Iran. “If she is causing problems there, we will welcome her here.” – President Silva of Brazil Read Article Here

Reproductive Autonomy

  • A new combination of pills could provide safe, quick medical abortions to the women around the world, especially in developing countries, where over 70,000 women die of abortion related complications. Read Article Here



  • Republicans have politically taken aim at women who they believe come to the United States solely for the purpose of having children, or “anchor babies”, so that they can stay in the country.  In their attack on these women and their families, a Washington Post Op-Ed asks if they are disregarding their party origins for the sake of elections and political power. Women in the Workforce

  • A New York Times article analyzes how although single women and men are fast approaching equality in the the job world, women with children are an entirely different story. “American feminists made a conscious choice to emphasize equal rights and equal opportunities, but not to talk about policies that would address family responsibilities.” Read Article Here
