I coach brilliant women, lots of them. Dedicated, talented, brilliant women.

Most of the time, they don’t know their brilliance. They are certain they “aren’t ready” to take on that next bigger role. They are more attuned to the ways they aren’t qualified than to the ways that they are. They are waiting for someone to validate or discover them. Sound familiar?

It’s a huge loss. Collectively, we miss out on the contributions of thousands of capable leaders. Brilliant women themselves miss out on the fulfillment that comes from using their abilities fully.

Let’s set ourselves on a different path, with these 10 rules for brilliant women:

Last April, I was on a panel titled Theatre for Social Transformation presented by Amnesty International’s Human Rights Art Festival.  One of my fellow panelists was the award-winning playwright Catherine Filloux, whose plays include Eyes of the Heart, Lemkin’s House, The Beauty Inside, and Silence of God. Over the last 20 years, Filloux has written over 20 plays, and she is known for writing about big issues like genocide, honor killings, and gender-based violence.

I was really inspired by Filloux’s career and wanted to learn more about her work, so I recently interviewed her by phone. I thought I would take a moment to share some of her thoughts with readers because she said some interesting things about playwriting, expanding audiences, and the theatre’s unique ability to foster dialogue.

Often heard and seen on XM Sirius, comedy clubs, and other venues, Leighann Lord is seriously hella funny. Her comedy is the perfect mix of sarcasm and social commentary. More than a one-liner, she’s rocked on TV – appearing on ABC (The View), HBO (The Original Def Comedy Jam), Comedy Central (The World Stands Up and Premium Blend), Lifetime (Girl’s Night Out), and FoxNews (The Strategy Room). A writer as well, Leighann’s views on an array of topics can be read in Stage Time Magazine, The Huffington Post, and on her website: VeryFunnyLady.com. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Leighann Lord.

Will: Who is Leighann Lord? Why comedy?

Leighann: Leighann Lord is a world traveling stand-up comedian, writer, actress, black belt, type A workaholic-perfectionist, and unabashed sci-fi fan. I love writing, performing and making people laugh. It also helps that I hated my day job and being cooped up in a cubicle all day made me itch. And by itch, I mean cry.
