As we head into the New Year, media outlets ranging from CNBC to the Washington Post are full of financial commentary addressing this question. On the surface it seems like a logical query.

But if you were getting ready to go out, would you ask “What Should I Wear?”… without describing where you are heading? Of course not. The clothes you’d wear to shovel snow in will be very different from the clothes you’d wear to a wedding.

That’s why “How Should I Invest?” are the four most dangerous words to your portfolio. The answer to that question is often given as if one size fits all, when it’s anything but. To protect yourself, here are 5 things to think about to make sure your hard earned money is invested in a way that is appropriate for your specific situation.

From Ms. Magazine Feminist Wire Daily Newsbriefs on February 10th.

Representative Hal Rogers (R-KY), Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, announced a list of 70 spending cuts to be included in the FY 2011 Continuing Resolution bill, including a $327 million cut in family planning funds. In 2010, $317 million in federal funding was allocated to family planning programs. Cecile Richards, President of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, explained that the Continuing Resolution would eliminate the Title X family planning program, which gives millions of women access to primary and preventive health care, including cancer screenings, and STI testing and treatment.

In 1870 Hunter College was founded as a teaching institution for women. Now more than a century later the Women and Gender Studies Program (WGS) at Hunter College is being threatened because it is not being allowed departmental status. As a result the program is systematically excluded from the processes of Hunter’s governance. This is after 35 years of its creation.

Over the past ten years, the Women and Gender Studies Program at Hunter College  has experienced tremendous growth, increasing from 38 majors in 2001 to 85 in 2010. Despite doubling in size, the program still operates with only one full-time tenure-track faculty member. Furthermore, as of 2011 the co-director’s contract for this program has not been renewed for the fall. Without a successor director and the job of the current co-director under threat what will become of the WGS program is uncertain.
